I don't live in US or Canada, but I Think I Want a Windowfarm...

Do you ship to my country?

Currently, we do not. We will soon begin selling and international version. It will not include the pump and the timer due to differences in power supplies internationally. We will not be able to ship plants or nutrients internationally due to customs regulations.

I have questions about my local climate and where I can source parts locally

We have individual groups of Windowfarmers formed on our community site all over the world! It’s the best place for you to seek solutions to issues only unique to your environment. We encourage you to have dialogues with your peers and learn from one another by posting your experiences. And if the group you're looking for doesn't exist, be the first to start!  Spread the words and expand your Windowfarming community.

Why will the international version not come with a pump nor a timer?

We do not include pumps and timers because of power supply differences. Because we're offering the new Windowfarms to multiple locations worldwide, it’s only reasonable to have them sourced locally to best meet your power requirements. We also believe it’s better for the planet because otherwise you would have to buy a power adapter, which would make your Windowfarm less efficient.

Where can I find my pump and timer?

There are many online hydroponic shops where you can easily find air pumps and timers.  Also, the air pump we use is a standard pump used in many aquarium tanks, which you can easily find at your local pet stores. Please check the pump in the store as some models do not work well. When you plug it in, you should feel air pushing against your finger without a break. You should get a 48 on/off mechanical 24 hour cycle timer

Why can't the seedlings be shipped internationally?

By international law, we are prohibited from shipping plants or seeds across international borders.

How do I start planting?

You have the following options:

  • 1. Transplant potted dirt plants by carefully shaking dirt out of plants' roots.  It is important to do so carefully and not to overly disturb the already established root systems, but at the same time get as much soil out as possible to prevent Windowfarms from clogging. On average, only 80% of healthy plants survive transplanting. Let the soil dry slightly so that you can shake the soil free rather than dealing with mud. Some branches may die while the core of the plant is still healthy. Trim off dead branches and roots with scissors to promote the health of the overall plant.
  • 2. Start your own seeds in composted tree bark sponges or root plugs that can be found online or at your local hydroponic store. We do not recommend peat plugs or other materials that deteriorate in the system. Rockwool is also an option, which we generally do not prefer just because it impacts system pH, absorbs too much moisture, and is not a pleasant material to work with.
  • 3. Take cuttings- Consult your seed packet or ask the community at our.windowfarms.org to determine if the varietal you would like to grow is suitable for taking cuttings. Many plants will grow new root systems from a cut stem.
  • 4. Research local commercial hydroponic activity in your area. One of your local hydroponic farmers who sells to retail chains or farmer's markets may be willing to bring seedlings with living roots to your market. Just be sure that the plants' are still grow ready. They should not be "finished" with chemicals that make them look good at market, but effectively kill them, which is a common practice in the industry.
